Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign Venus occupied when you were born. Astrologers read it as the part of you that decides what is attractive, what feels like affection and what is worth valuing. It shapes your taste in people and in things, and the way you prefer to give and receive care. It is always within two signs of your Sun sign.

What Venus Describes in a Birth Chart

Astrologers read your Venus sign as your relationship to pleasure: who and what you find attractive, how you show affection, and what you value enough to protect. It describes taste as much as romance, so it shows up in friendships, in how you spend money and in what you find beautiful.

In traditional astrology Venus rules two signs, Taurus and Libra, and is called the lesser benefic, the planet of ease, attraction and agreement. (Jupiter is the greater benefic.) Taurus brings out its sensual, earthy side and Libra its social side, the side concerned with balance and partnership. Every Venus sign mixes those two notes in its own proportions.

Why Your Venus Sign Stays Close to Your Sun Sign

Venus orbits the Sun inside Earth's orbit, so from Earth it never appears far from the Sun. Checked day by day from 1950 to 2030, the widest gap between them is 47.16°. A sign is 30° wide, and a gap of under 60° can cross at most two sign boundaries. Your Venus sign is therefore your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it: five possibilities in all.

Example: a Gemini Sun can have Venus in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer or Leo. It cannot have Venus in Virgo, three signs away, or in Sagittarius, the opposite sign.

This is also why Venus descriptions can overlap with Sun-sign ones, and why people born a few weeks apart so often share a Venus sign. The Venus sign calculator settles which of the five is yours.

Venus in Each of the 12 Signs

Each note covers what astrologers associate with Venus in that sign: what attracts it, how it shows love and what tends to put it off. The dignities are traditional. Venus is at home in Taurus and Libra, exalted in Pisces, in detriment in Aries and Scorpio, and in fall in Virgo. Detriment and fall mean Venus is working in an unfamiliar register. They do not mean someone is bad at love.

Venus in Aries

Fire, cardinal, and one of Venus's two signs of detriment, opposite its home in Libra. Here the unfamiliar register is directness: affection comes quickly and plainly rather than diplomatically. An Aries Venus is associated with attraction to confidence, energy and a little challenge. It shows love by pursuing, defending and doing things together. Long games of hard-to-get, or partners who never say what they want, tend to put it off.

Venus in Taurus

Earth, fixed, and one of Venus's two home signs. A Taurus Venus is associated with sensual, loyal and patient love. It is drawn to warmth, steadiness and people who are comfortable in their own skin. Affection comes through touch, food, gifts chosen with care and simply showing up. Rushing, unreliability and drama for its own sake tend to put it off. Once committed, it is slow to give up on a bond.

Venus in Gemini

Air, mutable. A Gemini Venus is associated with falling for a mind first: wit, curiosity and conversation that never runs dry. It flirts with words and keeps love alive with novelty, shared jokes and plans. Affection shows in messages, introductions and genuine interest in the other person's world. Boredom is its main turn-off, along with possessiveness that limits its freedom to talk to everyone. It wants a partner who is also a good friend.

Venus in Cancer

Water, cardinal. A Cancer Venus is associated with tender, protective love and a strong need for emotional safety. It is drawn to kindness, loyalty and people who make it feel at home. Affection shows through care: cooking, remembering small details, checking in. It can be shy at first and takes rejection to heart. Coldness or carelessness with feelings puts it off quickly, while consistency over time is what lets it open up.

Venus in Leo

Fire, fixed. A Leo Venus is associated with generous, romantic and expressive love. It is drawn to people with presence, warmth and a sense of fun, and it likes to feel chosen, openly. Affection shows through grand gestures, praise and public loyalty. Indifference wounds it more than conflict does. Stinginess, emotional or material, tends to put it off, as does a partner who seems reluctant to be seen with it.

Venus in Virgo

Earth, mutable, and Venus's traditional fall, opposite its exaltation in Pisces. The fall is often explained as Venus's wish for easy pleasure meeting a sign that analyses and improves. A Virgo Venus is associated with love shown through attention and service: noticing details, solving problems, keeping promises. It is drawn to competence and sincerity. Carelessness and empty flattery put it off. It can be critical, of itself most of all, while it learns to accept affection as it comes.

Venus in Libra

Air, cardinal, and Venus's other home sign. A Libra Venus is associated with grace, charm and a talent for partnership. It is drawn to beauty, good manners and fairness, and it wants a relationship that feels balanced. Affection shows through attention, compromise and shared pleasures such as art, music and good company. Crudeness and constant conflict tend to put it off. Its challenge is saying no when keeping the peace would cost too much.

Venus in Scorpio

Water, fixed, and Venus's other sign of detriment, opposite its home in Taurus. Here the unfamiliar register is depth: light, easy affection gives way to intensity and all-or-nothing attachment. A Scorpio Venus is associated with attraction to mystery, emotional honesty and loyalty. It shows love through devotion and by keeping confidences. Jealousy can surface when it feels insecure. Superficiality and broken trust are its strongest turn-offs, and it rarely forgets either.

Venus in Sagittarius

Fire, mutable. A Sagittarius Venus is associated with love as an adventure. It is drawn to humour, openness and people who widen its world through travel, ideas or belief. Affection shows through shared experiences and honest enthusiasm, and it is often drawn to people from a different background. It needs space, so jealousy and routines that feel like walls tend to put it off. When it commits, it wants a companion for the journey rather than a fixed address.

Venus in Capricorn

Earth, cardinal. A Capricorn Venus is associated with serious, loyal and patient love. It is drawn to maturity, ambition and people who keep their word. Affection is shown through reliability, practical support and building something that lasts. It can be reserved at first and may test a partner's intentions before trusting them. Shared long-term goals matter to it. Flakiness and wasted time put it off. Its warmth often grows stronger with the years.

Venus in Aquarius

Air, fixed. An Aquarius Venus is associated with love that starts as friendship and respects independence. It is drawn to originality, intelligence and people with ideals. Affection shows through loyalty, shared causes and accepting a partner's quirks. It needs personal space and can seem detached when it is simply thinking. Clinginess and rigid expectations about how a couple should behave tend to put it off. It wants a partner who is also an equal.

Venus in Pisces

Water, mutable, and Venus's traditional exaltation, where its wish for harmony meets Pisces' compassion. A Pisces Venus is associated with romantic, empathetic and generous love. It is drawn to sensitivity, creativity and people who need understanding. Affection shows through kindness, forgiveness and quiet devotion. Small romantic gestures in daily life mean a lot to it. Harshness and cynicism put it off. Its challenge is seeing a partner as they are, rather than as the person it hopes they will become.

Venus and Mars: What Draws You and How You Pursue It

Astrologers usually read Venus alongside Mars. Venus describes what attracts you and how you like to receive affection. Mars describes how you act on desire, take the initiative and handle friction. Someone with Venus in Taurus and Mars in Aries, for example, may want slow, steady affection while moving fast once interested.

When the two sit in the same element, taste and desire tend to point the same way. When they sit in very different elements, a person may be drawn to one kind of partner and pursue another, or need different things at different stages of a relationship. Neither pattern is better than the other. In relationship astrology, a close aspect between one person's Venus and the other's Mars is traditionally read as a sign of attraction.

Venus Retrograde in 2026, and Your Own Love Windows

Venus also moves through your chart by transit, and in October and November 2026 it is retrograde. It stationed retrograde on 3 October at 8°29′ Scorpio, moves back into Libra on 25 October, and stations direct at 22°51′ Libra on 14 November at about 00:20 UTC. That is still the afternoon or evening of 13 November in the Americas, and 14 November in the UK, India and Singapore.

The backward motion is an effect of perspective. Earth and Venus are passing each other, and Venus is closest to Earth at the inferior conjunction on 24 October, when it lines up between Earth and the Sun. Venus turns retrograde about every 19 months, for roughly six weeks; this one lasts 42 days.

Astrologers traditionally read a Venus retrograde as a time to review relationships, values and spending rather than to start something new. That is a convention, not a rule, and nothing in it predicts what happens in a particular relationship.

Venus Sign Questions

Do I need my birth time for my Venus sign?

Usually, no. Venus typically spends about 3½ weeks in a sign; the median stay from 2000 to 2030 is 24.6 days. Around a retrograde it can stay in one sign for up to about four months. Only people born on a day Venus changed sign need an exact time to settle it.

Can two people with the same Venus sign be compatible?

Often, in the sense that they tend to value similar things and show affection in ways the other recognises. Astrologers would still look at the rest of both charts, because shared taste is not the same as shared needs, timing or goals. Same-sign Venus pairs are common, since people born within a few weeks of each other frequently share one.

Is my Venus sign the same as my love language?

No. The five love languages come from Gary Chapman's book on relationships and have no astrological basis, and astrology describes affection in its own, separate terms. Some Venus descriptions sound similar to a love language, but there is no established match between the two frameworks.

Is Venus in detriment or fall bad for love?

No. Detriment and fall are traditional labels for how comfortably a planet works in a sign. A Venus in Aries, Scorpio or Virgo expresses affection in a less typical style for Venus: more direct, more intense or more practical. Nothing in the tradition says people with these placements love less, or are loved less.
