Mars in Your Chart: The Planet of Action
Astrologers read your Mars sign as drive: the way you take the initiative, assert yourself, compete, express anger and pursue desire. If the Sun is who you are and the Moon is what you need, Mars is how you act, especially when something matters to you.
Mars and Venus are often read as a pair. Venus describes what you are drawn to; Mars describes how you go after it. The companion piece on what your Venus sign says about how you love covers that half.
In traditional astrology Mars rules Aries and Scorpio and is called the lesser malefic, the planet of heat, separation and cutting. That label describes the symbolism of conflict, not bad people. Mars is also courage, protection and the energy to finish what you start. Scorpio is traditionally ruled by Mars; many modern astrologers add Pluto as its co-ruler.
Why Mars Sometimes Stays in One Sign for Months
Mars usually spends about 6½ weeks in a sign; the median stay from 2000 to 2030 is 45.1 days. Around a retrograde it stays much longer. Over those same years, stays range from 38 days to 235 days.
The reason is geometry. Earth, on its faster inside orbit, regularly overtakes Mars, and as it does, Mars appears to stop, move backwards and stop again. That happens about every 26 months (Mars's synodic period is 779.9 days), and each time Mars lingers over the same stretch of the zodiac.
The current cycle shows it clearly:
- ✦Mars entered Leo on 28 September 2026 and enters Virgo on 25 November 2026.
- ✦It turns retrograde on 10 January 2027 at 10°25′ Virgo.
- ✦It backs into Leo on 21 February 2027.
- ✦It turns direct on 1 April 2027 at 20°55′ Leo.
- ✦It returns to Virgo on 14 May 2027 and reaches Libra on 15 July 2027.
That is about 9½ months in Leo and Virgo combined, against a typical 6½ weeks per sign. Everyone born between late September 2026 and mid-July 2027 has Mars in one of those two signs, however many months apart their birthdays fall.
Mars in Each of the 12 Signs
Each note covers what astrologers associate with Mars in that sign: how it drives, how it gets angry and how it desires. The dignities are traditional. Mars is at home in Aries and Scorpio, exalted in Capricorn, in detriment in Libra and Taurus, and in fall in Cancer. Those labels describe how naturally Mars's direct force fits a sign. A Mars in detriment or fall still gets things done, often in a subtler way.
Mars in Aries
Fire, cardinal, and one of Mars's two home signs. Astrologers read an Aries Mars as Mars at its most direct: quick to start, competitive and brave. Drive comes in bursts, and it prefers to act first and refine later. Anger runs hot, open and usually brief. In desire it is straightforward and enjoys the chase. Its growth edge is follow-through, because the excitement of starting can fade before the finish line.
Mars in Taurus
Earth, fixed, and one of Mars's signs of detriment, opposite its home in Scorpio. Here Mars works slowly and steadily rather than with sudden force. A Taurus Mars is associated with stamina, patience and stubborn determination. It is slow to anger, but once pushed it can be immovable. Desire is sensual and unhurried. Practical, physical work often suits its energy. It builds things that last, provided nobody tries to rush it.
Mars in Gemini
Air, mutable. A Gemini Mars is associated with mental energy: debating, multitasking and acting through words. Drive is quick and varied, and sometimes scattered across too many projects. Anger tends to come out verbally, in a sharp remark or a fast argument, and passes once it has been said. In desire it is playful and drawn to conversation and novelty. Choosing one goal and staying with it is often its main challenge.
Mars in Cancer
Water, cardinal, and Mars's traditional fall, opposite its exaltation in Capricorn. Astrologers explain the fall as Mars's direct force meeting a sign that protects and feels before it acts. A Cancer Mars is associated with drive that is strongest on behalf of family, home or the people it loves. Anger can be indirect, showing up as sulking or a cutting comment, and it remembers slights. In desire it wants emotional closeness first. Its protective instinct is a real strength.
Mars in Leo
Fire, fixed. A Leo Mars is associated with confident, dramatic and wholehearted action. It wants its effort to be seen and is driven by pride and creative ambition. Anger flares when it feels disrespected, and it can be slow to back down in public. In desire it is romantic, generous and keen to impress. It leads naturally and works best with room to shine and a cause worth the effort.
Mars in Virgo
Earth, mutable. A Virgo Mars is associated with precise, methodical and skilful effort. It likes to improve things, solve problems and do a job properly. Anger tends to come out as criticism or quiet irritation rather than an outburst. In desire it is attentive and shows interest through helpfulness and care with small details. Perfectionism can slow it down, so learning when something is good enough is part of its path.
Mars in Libra
Air, cardinal, and Mars's other sign of detriment, opposite its home in Aries. Here Mars acts through negotiation and partnership rather than solo force. A Libra Mars is associated with diplomacy, charm and a strong sense of fairness. It may hesitate to act when someone could be upset, and anger can be held back until it surfaces as passive resistance. In desire it is romantic and attentive to its partner. It fights hardest for justice.
Mars in Scorpio
Water, fixed, and Mars's other home sign in traditional astrology. A Scorpio Mars is associated with intense, focused and strategic drive. It rarely gives up and prefers to act out of sight until it is ready. Anger runs deep and can be held for a long time. In desire it is passionate and all-in. Its strength is endurance under pressure, and its challenge is letting go once a fight is over.
Mars in Sagittarius
Fire, mutable. A Sagittarius Mars is associated with enthusiastic, adventurous and restless energy. It is driven by ideas, travel and the next horizon, and it likes to act on its beliefs. Anger is quick, outspoken and soon forgotten. In desire it is spontaneous and fun-loving. It does best with goals big enough to keep it interested. Detail and routine come harder than starting something new, and it may overpromise in a burst of optimism.
Mars in Capricorn
Earth, cardinal, and Mars's traditional exaltation, where its force is matched with discipline. A Capricorn Mars is associated with ambition, patience and strategic effort over the long term. It works steadily, respects structure and tends to keep its temper under control, though cold anger can last. It tends to respect earned authority and to want some of its own. In desire it is earthy and committed. Its challenge is making room for rest and play alongside achievement.
Mars in Aquarius
Air, fixed. An Aquarius Mars is associated with independent, inventive and principled action. It is driven by ideas, causes and doing things its own way. Anger is often cool and detached, aimed at systems or unfairness rather than at people. In desire it values friendship, freedom and a meeting of minds. It can be stubborn about its views, and it acts best when working toward a vision larger than itself.
Mars in Pisces
Water, mutable. A Pisces Mars is associated with gentle, intuitive and adaptable action. It is driven by compassion, imagination and creative ideals, and it often works best without rigid plans. Anger is rarely direct; it may withdraw, or let resentment pile up unspoken. In desire it is romantic and responsive, and it may act on hunches before it can explain them. Clear boundaries and a purpose it believes in help it turn sensitivity into steady drive.
Anger and Conflict: What Each Element Needs in a Fight
These are tendencies astrologers associate with each element's Mars. They are not rules, and they are not a way to diagnose anyone's temper. Anger that frightens you or the people around you is something to take to a qualified professional, not to a birth chart.
- ✦Fire Mars (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): needs to say it now. Waiting can feel like being silenced. A short, agreed pause works better for it than an open-ended one.
- ✦Earth Mars (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): needs time and a practical way forward. Pressure makes it dig in, and a concrete proposal lands better than raised voices.
- ✦Air Mars (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): needs to talk it through and to feel the process is fair. Silence and emotional flooding both frustrate it.
- ✦Water Mars (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): needs emotional safety before it can engage, and it may go quiet first. Reassurance that the relationship itself is not at stake helps it say what it actually feels.
Knowing a partner's Mars sign as well as your own can explain why one of you wants to settle a disagreement straight away and the other wants to sleep on it. Neither approach is wrong; they simply run on different clocks.
Mars Sign Questions
Is Mars retrograde in my birth chart bad?
No. A natal Mars retrograde means Mars appeared to move backwards when you were born. It happens once every 26 months or so and lasts a couple of months; the 2027 retrograde lasts 81 days. Astrologers often read it as drive that turns inward first: reflecting before acting, revisiting goals, or working best on your own timetable. It describes a style, not a flaw.
Do I need my birth time for my Mars sign?
Usually, no. Mars stays in a sign for weeks at a time, so your birth date is normally enough. You only need a time if you were born on a day Mars changed sign. The Mars sign calculator takes your birth time as well as your date and place, so it handles those days correctly.
What does my Mars sign say about attraction?
Astrologers read Mars as the way you pursue and express desire, and Venus as what attracts you. In relationship astrology, a close aspect between one person's Mars and the other's Venus is traditionally read as a sign of chemistry. Looking at both your Mars and Venus signs together usually says more than either alone.
Why is my Mars sign so different from my Sun sign?
Because Mars, unlike Mercury and Venus, orbits outside Earth's orbit. Seen from Earth, it can be anywhere in the zodiac relative to the Sun, including the opposite sign. A Mars sign far from your Sun sign is common, and astrologers often read it as a style of action that contrasts with your core identity.
