Station times are approximate, to within roughly a quarter of an hour, because a planet that is barely moving makes the exact turning point hard to pin down. Several of these moments land close to midnight UTC, so the local date depends on where you are:

  • ✦Station retrograde, 3 October: just after midnight on the US West Coast (about 00:10 Pacific), and 3 October everywhere else listed here.
  • ✦Inferior conjunction: 8:39 pm on 23 October in US Pacific time and 11:39 pm in US Eastern; 24 October in the UK (04:39), India (09:09) and Singapore (11:39).
  • ✦Station direct: 13 November at about 4:20 pm Pacific and 7:20 pm Eastern (US daylight saving time ends on 1 November); 14 November just after midnight in the UK, about 05:50 in India and 08:20 in Singapore.
  • ✦Post-shadow ends: 15 December in the Americas and the UK; 16 December in India (00:06) and Singapore (02:36).

The station retrograde has already happened: as of 6 October, Venus is three days into its backward run.

Why Venus appears to move backwards

Venus orbits the Sun inside Earth's orbit, and faster: it laps us once every 583.9 days on average. As it comes round to pass between Earth and the Sun, its motion seen from Earth slows, stops and runs backwards against the background stars for about six weeks. That apparent reversal is the retrograde. Venus itself never changes direction.

The midpoint is the inferior conjunction on 24 October, when Venus lines up between Earth and the Sun and is at its closest to us. Around that date it is lost in the Sun's glare. Before it, Venus is the evening star in the western sky after sunset; after it, Venus reappears as the morning star before dawn.

Because the lap takes about 19 months, Venus turns retrograde less often than Mercury, and each episode lasts around six weeks. This one runs 42 days. For the general idea of retrograde motion, and how astrologers came to read it, see what Mercury retrograde really means.

From Scorpio back into Libra

This retrograde starts in one of Venus's hardest signs and ends in one of its easiest.

Scorpio, 3 to 25 October. In traditional astrology Venus is in its detriment in Scorpio, the sign opposite its own Taurus. Detriment doesn't mean bad at love. It means Venus is working in an unfamiliar register: Scorpio is ruled by Mars (many modern astrologers add Pluto), and astrologers associate a Scorpio Venus with depth, privacy, loyalty and a wish for emotional honesty over pleasantness. A retrograde there is often read as a time when buried feelings, jealousy or unspoken terms in a relationship come up for review.

Libra, 25 October to 13/14 November. Libra is one of Venus's two home signs, its domicile. Astrologers link Venus in Libra with fairness, partnership, diplomacy and taste. Retrograde here is commonly read as a time to reconsider balance in a relationship: who gives, who takes, what was agreed.

The Libra stretch also revisits old ground. Venus reached 22°51′ Libra, the degree where it will turn direct, on 31 August, and crossed into Scorpio in September. Whatever came up in your relationships or finances between late August and mid-September is, by astrological convention, the material this retrograde returns to.

After the direct station Venus moves forward through late Libra again, re-enters Scorpio in early December and passes 8°29′ Scorpio on 15 December, closing the cycle.

The eight-year echo: autumn 2018

Venus retrogrades repeat in almost the same part of the zodiac every eight years. Five Venus cycles of 583.9 days add up to 2,919.5 days, which is eight calendar years minus about 2.4 days. So each repeat lands a couple of degrees earlier than the one before.

The 2018 retrograde shows the pattern. Venus stationed retrograde on 5 October 2018 (6 October in India and East Asia) at 10°50′ Scorpio, slipped back into Libra on 31 October (1 November in India and East Asia) and turned direct on 16 November 2018 at 25°14′ Libra. The 2026 station points sit about 2°20′ earlier on both ends: 8°29′ Scorpio and 22°51′ Libra.

Astrologers often suggest looking back at autumn 2018 when a Venus retrograde returns. If a relationship, a breakup, a money decision or a change of style stands out from that season, it may be worth noticing whether the same theme surfaces now. Treat this as a prompt for reflection, not a forecast.

Signs and charts most affected

Every chart has Venus somewhere and Libra and Scorpio somewhere, so this retrograde touches everyone. The question is where, and how directly.

Most directly: placements in the retrograde zone. Venus travels between 22°51′ Libra and 8°29′ Scorpio three times between 31 August and 15 December. Planets or angles in your birth chart within that stretch are the ones astrologers expect to be most in focus. If your natal Venus is in Libra or Scorpio, find your Venus sign and degree to see whether it falls inside.

By aspect. As an astrological convention, signs opposite and square to the zone are also emphasised: Aries and Taurus (opposite), and Cancer, Leo, Capricorn and Aquarius (square). The sensitive degrees are roughly 22° Aries to 8° Taurus, 22° Cancer to 8° Leo, and 22° Capricorn to 8° Aquarius.

By house. In Whole Sign houses, the houses Libra and Scorpio occupy from your Rising sign show which areas of life the retrograde runs through:

Your Rising sign needs an accurate birth time; the Sun, Moon and Rising calculator finds it. None of this is a per-sign prediction. It tells you where to look, not what will happen.

Working with it, without the fear

Astrologers associate Venus with love, attraction, money, pleasure and taste, so a Venus retrograde is usually framed as a review of those things rather than a time to push them forward. Useful ways to work with it:

  • ✦Look again at a relationship pattern you keep repeating, and name what you actually want from it.
  • ✦Revisit spending and saving, especially on luxury, beauty and gifts, and check that it matches what you value.
  • ✦Finish or repair creative work rather than launching something new.
  • ✦If an old partner or friend gets back in touch, notice what the contact brings up before deciding anything.

Folk advice about Venus retrograde is familiar: don't marry, don't start a relationship, don't make cosmetic changes, don't buy expensive things. These are conventions of modern astrology, and there is no established evidence that choices made during a retrograde turn out worse. Some people simply prefer to wait until Venus is direct; others go ahead with plans already made. Either is reasonable.

Nothing about a retrograde makes a relationship fail or succeed. If you'd like dates for when Venus and Jupiter transits activate your own chart, the love timing calculator gives them.

Venus retrograde questions

Is it safe to start a relationship during Venus retrograde?

Nothing about the retrograde makes it unsafe. Avoiding new relationships while Venus is retrograde is a tradition, not a rule, and there is no evidence behind it. Astrologers who follow it suggest taking things slowly and getting to know someone before committing, which works at any time of year.

When is Venus out of the shadow?

On 15 December 2026, when Venus passes 8°29′ Scorpio again (16 December in India and Singapore). Shadow periods are a modern convention: they mark the degrees the retrograde covers, before and after. Traditional astrology doesn't use them, and some astrologers today give them little weight.

When is the next Venus retrograde?

In 2028, in Gemini. Venus stations retrograde on 10 May 2028 at 19°41′ Gemini, which is already 11 May in India and Singapore and falls around midnight in the UK. It turns direct on 22 June 2028 at 3°10′ Gemini (23 June in India and Singapore), 43 days later.

Does Venus retrograde affect everyone the same way?

No. Astrologers read it through your own chart: the house Libra and Scorpio occupy for you, and any planets you have between about 22° Libra and 8° Scorpio.
