North Node and South Node: What Your Lunar Nodes Mean

Quick answer

The lunar nodes are where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s. What North and South Node mean, why they move backwards, and the 2026–2028 Aquarius–Leo axis.

Your North Node and South Node are two opposite points on the Moon’s orbit, not bodies. Astrologers read the North Node’s sign as the qualities you are growing toward, which feel unfamiliar at first, and the South Node’s sign as what already comes easily and can harden into a rut. Together they form one axis.

Two crossing points, not two planets

The Moon’s orbit is tilted about 5° to the ecliptic, the path the Sun appears to trace through the zodiac over a year. So twice a month the Moon crosses the ecliptic: once heading north and once heading south. Those two crossing points are the lunar nodes.

  • ✦The North Node (ascending node) is where the Moon crosses going north.
  • ✦The South Node (descending node) is where it crosses going south.

The line joining them runs through the Earth, so the two nodes are always exactly opposite each other, 180° apart. A North Node at 10° Aquarius means a South Node at 10° Leo. That is why your chart only ever shows one pair of signs, and why the two placements are read together.

The nodes also explain eclipses. A New Moon or Full Moon only becomes an eclipse when it happens close to one of the nodes, because only then are the Sun, Moon and Earth lined up in all three dimensions, not just along the zodiac. The Sun passes each node roughly once a year, so eclipses come in two seasons roughly six months apart.

Your node signs come from your birth date. The calculator gives your North Node sign free and instantly, with no signup; the South Node is always the opposite sign.

What astrologers read in the North and South Node

In modern Western astrology, the North Node is read as a growth edge: qualities that do not come naturally, that can feel clumsy or exposed, and that astrologers associate with a sense of direction when you lean into them. The South Node is read as the familiar default: skills and habits that come easily, that you fall back on under pressure, and that can become a comfort zone you stay in too long. Neither end is good or bad. The usual advice is to keep the South Node’s gifts while moving toward the North Node’s.

Some astrologers frame the South Node as memory of past lives and the North Node as this life’s purpose. Others read the axis with no reincarnation idea at all, as a tension between habit and growth. Both framings are in use, and neither can be tested, so take the one that helps you think clearly.

Older traditions read the nodes differently again. Medieval Western astrology called them the Head and Tail of the Dragon (Caput and Cauda Draconis) and linked the Head with increase and the Tail with decrease.

In Vedic astrology the North Node is Rahu and the South Node is Ketu. They count among the nine grahas but are called chhaya grahas, shadow planets, because they have no body. In the Puranic story, the asura Svarbhanu drank the nectar of immortality and was cut in two by Vishnu’s discus; his head became Rahu and his body Ketu, and the pair are said to swallow the Sun and Moon at eclipses. Jyotish associates Rahu with craving, ambition and the unfamiliar, and Ketu with detachment, introspection and spiritual release. Because Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, Rahu’s sign can differ from your Western North Node sign; see why your sign is different in Vedic astrology.

Why the nodes move backwards

The Sun’s gravity slowly twists the plane of the Moon’s orbit, and the nodes slide westward along the ecliptic as a result. In zodiac terms they move backwards: from Pisces into Aquarius, then Capricorn, then Sagittarius, the reverse of the order the planets travel in.

  • ✦One full circuit of the zodiac takes about 18.6 years.
  • ✦That works out to about 18 to 19 months in each sign.
  • ✦The mean node moves about 3 minutes of arc a day, roughly 1.6° a month.

Because the node is so slow, everyone born within the same year and a half or so shares a node sign. The house it falls in, which depends on your birth time and Rising sign, is what makes it personal. Under Whole Sign houses, which Aurae uses, the nodes always fall in opposite houses: a North Node in the 10th means a South Node in the 4th.

Mean node or true node?

There are two ways to give the nodes a position, and they do not always agree.

  • ✦The mean node is a smoothed average. It moves backwards at a steady rate and never stops. Aurae uses the mean node in every chart and in the North Node calculator.
  • ✦The true node (sometimes called the osculating node) is the Moon’s actual crossing point at that instant. Because the Sun and Earth keep tugging on the Moon’s orbit, it wobbles around the mean node by up to almost two degrees, and it sometimes stands still or briefly moves forward.

Since the mean node covers only about 1.6° a month, a difference of a degree or two means the two methods can put a sign change weeks apart, and the true node can even cross a sign boundary more than once. For almost every birth date they give the same sign; the difference only matters if you were born close to a change.

Which is right is a contested point. Astrologers who prefer the mean node argue it shows the long-term axis without short-term noise. Astrologers who prefer the true node argue it is where the Moon’s orbit really crosses the ecliptic. Both are in wide use, in Western and in Vedic practice. All dates on this page are for the mean node.

The nodes now: North Node in Aquarius, South Node in Leo

Here are the recent and coming sign changes of the mean North Node. The South Node changes at the same moment, into the opposite sign.

Astrologers read an Aquarius–Leo axis as a pull between the group and the individual: shared causes, networks and the common good on the North Node side, personal expression, pride and the spotlight on the South Node side. That is a collective theme, hedged like every reading of the sky, not a prediction for any one person.

Because eclipses happen near the nodes, the axis also sets where the eclipses land. While it runs through Leo and Aquarius, so do most of the 2027 eclipses:

  • ✦6 February 2027: annular solar eclipse, New Moon at 17°37′ Aquarius (15:56 UTC).
  • ✦2 August 2027: total solar eclipse, New Moon at 9°55′ Leo (10:05 UTC).
  • ✦17 August 2027: penumbral lunar eclipse, Full Moon at 24°11′ Aquarius (07:28 UTC).

The year’s other two eclipses fall just across the sign line, still close enough to the nodes: a penumbral lunar eclipse at the Full Moon of 20 February 2027 (2°05′ Virgo, 23:23 UTC, already 21 February in India and Singapore) and another at the Full Moon of 18 July 2027 (25°48′ Capricorn, 15:44 UTC).

Nodal returns: about every 18.6 years

Because the nodes take about 18.6 years to go round, they return to their birth position around ages 18 to 19, 37, 56 and 74. Halfway between, around ages 9, 28 and 46, they sit reversed, with the transiting North Node on your natal South Node.

Astrologers often read nodal returns as checkpoints for direction: moments when the question of where you are heading comes up again. The first falls around the age many people finish school and the second in the late thirties, both common turning points anyway, so treat the timing as a prompt for reflection rather than proof of anything.

Each North Node sign has its own page on Aurae:

North and South Node: short answers

Is the North Node my destiny?

Not in any fixed sense. Astrologers read it as a direction that tends to feel rewarding when you move toward it, not as an outcome that will happen whatever you do. Your choices stay your own.

Do I need my birth time for my North Node?

Rarely for the sign. The node spends about 18 months in each sign, so your birth date is enough unless the node changed signs on the day you were born. For the house, yes: it depends on your Rising sign.

Are Rahu and Ketu the same as the North and South Node?

They are the same two points in the sky. The differences are in how they are measured and read: Jyotish places them in the sidereal zodiac, about 24° behind the tropical one, so the sign can be one earlier, and it gives them its own meanings as shadow planets.

Is the South Node bad?

No. Modern astrology reads it as talent and habit, the things you can already do. The caution is only about leaning on it so hard that you stop growing.
