What your North Node sign means
The North Node (with its opposite, the South Node) marks where the Moon’s orbit crosses the path of the Sun. In astrology the North Node sign describes the qualities you are here to grow into — unfamiliar, often uncomfortable, and deeply rewarding — while the South Node, always the opposite sign, shows the habits and gifts you already carry. The nodes move backwards through the zodiac, spending about eighteen months in each sign and taking roughly 18.6 years to complete the circle. Aurae calculates the mean node, so your birth date is enough; a birth time only matters if the node changed signs on the day you were born.
Frequently asked questions
What is the North Node?
The North Node is not a planet but a point: the place where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic heading north. Astrologers read its sign as your growth edge — the qualities your life keeps pulling you toward. The South Node sits exactly opposite, six signs away, and describes what comes naturally to you and what you may over-rely on.
Why does the North Node move backwards?
The Moon’s orbit slowly precesses, so the points where it crosses the ecliptic drift westward — backwards through the zodiac, from Aries into Pisces into Aquarius and so on — completing a full circuit every 18.6 years. That is why nodal returns fall around ages 18–19, 37, and 56.
Mean node or true node — which does this calculator use?
Aurae uses the mean node: the smoothed average position, always moving backwards at a steady pace. The true node wobbles around it by up to almost two degrees as the Moon’s orbit is perturbed. The two almost always give the same sign; only if you were born while the node sat within a degree or two of a sign boundary might a true-node calculator show the neighbouring sign.
Do I need my birth time for my North Node sign?
Usually not. The node spends about eighteen months in each sign, so your birth date is enough unless it changed signs on the day you were born — that is the one case where an exact time settles it.
Is this calculator free?
