The 2027 Mercury retrograde calendar
All times are UTC. Stations and retrograde sign changes are approximate to within about a quarter of an hour, so they are given as "about" or as a date.

Where the local date differs from the UTC date (checked for US Eastern and Pacific, UK, India and Singapore):
- ✦25 January pre-shadow: 26 January in India and Singapore.
- ✦9 February station: 10 February in Singapore (about 01:35); in India it falls late on 9 February, close to midnight.
- ✦18 February inferior conjunction: 19 February in Singapore, just after midnight.
- ✦26 May pre-shadow: 11:04 pm on 25 May on the US West Coast.
- ✦10 June station: 11 June in Singapore; around midnight in India, so 10 or 11 June there.
- ✦4 July direct station: 5 July in India and Singapore.
Everything else in the table falls on the same date in all five places. Each retrograde begins and ends at the degrees shown, so the shadow periods mark exactly the stretch of the zodiac each one covers. For how retrograde motion works in general, see what Mercury retrograde really means.
February 9 to March 3: Pisces back into Aquarius
Mercury turns retrograde at 5°58′ Pisces, slips back into Aquarius on 18 February, passes between Earth and the Sun a few hours later at 29°47′ Aquarius, and turns direct at 20°55′ Aquarius on 3 March.
In traditional astrology Pisces is Mercury's hardest sign: it is in its detriment there, opposite its home sign of Virgo, and in its fall. Astrologers associate a Pisces Mercury with intuitive, image-led thinking that is less interested in sequence and detail. A retrograde in Pisces is often read as a time when instructions blur, intentions are misread and the imagination runs ahead of the facts.
Aquarius gives Mercury no traditional dignity either way. The sign is ruled by Saturn in traditional astrology; many modern astrologers add Uranus. Mercury in Aquarius is linked with systems, abstract ideas, group communication and technology, so the second half of this retrograde is commonly read as a time to recheck shared plans, group arrangements and the tools you rely on.
For the natal side of these placements, see Mercury in Pisces and Mercury in Aquarius.
June 10 to July 4: Cancer back into Gemini
The longest retrograde of the year, at 24 days. Mercury stations at 6°21′ Cancer, reaches inferior conjunction on 23 June at 1°39′ Cancer, crosses back into Gemini on 26 June and turns direct at 27°28′ Gemini on 4 July.
Cancer gives Mercury no traditional dignity; the sign is ruled by the Moon. Astrologers associate Mercury in Cancer with memory, feeling-led communication and conversations about home and family. Gemini, by contrast, is one of Mercury's two home signs, its domicile. A Gemini Mercury is linked with curiosity, quick exchange, information and short journeys, and a retrograde there is often read as a time for rereading, re-sorting and catching up on loose ends.
The post-shadow ends on 19 July. Two weeks later, on 2 August 2027, the total solar eclipse at 9°55′ Leo follows, with the New Moon at 10:05 UTC. Mercury will be direct and clear of its shadow by then, but the two events sit close together in the calendar.

October 7 to 28: Scorpio back into Libra
The shortest of the three, at 21 days. Mercury stations at 4°55′ Scorpio, crosses back into Libra on 16 October, reaches inferior conjunction on 19 October at 26°01′ Libra and turns direct at 19°18′ Libra on 28 October.
Neither sign gives Mercury a traditional dignity. Scorpio is ruled by Mars (many modern astrologers add Pluto) and Libra by Venus. Astrologers associate Mercury in Scorpio with probing, private, investigative thinking, and Mercury in Libra with weighing both sides, negotiation and tact. A retrograde that moves from one into the other can be read as a move from probing to weighing.
There is a neat link with the year before. The October–November 2026 retrograde ran entirely in Scorpio, between 5°02′ and 20°58′. The 2027 one turns at 4°55′ Scorpio, right where that earlier zone began, and works backwards from there. The full 2026 dates are in Mercury retrograde in Scorpio, October–November 2026.
Water into air: the pattern in 2027
All three 2027 retrogrades start in a water sign (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio) and end in an air sign (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra). This is an observation from the dates, not a doctrine, but it has a simple astronomical cause.
Mercury laps Earth every 115.88 days on average, and in that time the Sun moves on by about 114°. So the three retrogrades of a year fall roughly a third of the zodiac apart, which tends to keep them in signs of one element. In 2027 the three stations land early in their water signs, between 4°55′ and 6°21′, and the backward arc, between about 9° and 16° long, carries Mercury into the air sign before each one.
The pattern also drifts. The autumn retrograde stationed at 20°58′ Scorpio in 2026 and stations at 4°55′ Scorpio in 2027, about 16° earlier. As the station points keep sliding back through the zodiac, Mercury's retrogrades in the following years move further into the air signs.
Read symbolically, water signs are associated with feeling and air signs with thought and communication, so the pattern can be taken as a prompt to put feelings into words. That is an interpretation, not a rule.
By Rising sign: the houses each retrograde touches
In Whole Sign houses, the house a sign occupies is counted from your Rising sign. Each retrograde starts in one house and backs into the house before it:
| Rising sign | Feb–Mar (Pisces → Aquarius) | Jun–Jul (Cancer → Gemini) | Oct (Scorpio → Libra) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 12th → 11th | 4th → 3rd | 8th → 7th |
| Taurus | 11th → 10th | 3rd → 2nd | 7th → 6th |
| Gemini | 10th → 9th | 2nd → 1st | 6th → 5th |
| Cancer | 9th → 8th | 1st → 12th | 5th → 4th |
| Leo | 8th → 7th | 12th → 11th | 4th → 3rd |
| Virgo | 7th → 6th | 11th → 10th | 3rd → 2nd |
| Libra | 6th → 5th | 10th → 9th | 2nd → 1st |
| Scorpio | 5th → 4th | 9th → 8th | 1st → 12th |
| Sagittarius | 4th → 3rd | 8th → 7th | 12th → 11th |
| Capricorn | 3rd → 2nd | 7th → 6th | 11th → 10th |
| Aquarius | 2nd → 1st | 6th → 5th | 10th → 9th |
| Pisces | 1st → 12th | 5th → 4th | 9th → 8th |
Planets in your birth chart inside a retrograde's range are the placements astrologers watch most closely: 20°55′ Aquarius to 5°58′ Pisces, 27°28′ Gemini to 6°21′ Cancer, and 19°18′ Libra to 4°55′ Scorpio. Your Rising sign changes about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time; the calculator below works it out.
Mercury retrograde 2027 questions
Are there four Mercury retrogrades in 2027?
No, three. A scan of every day of 2027 finds only three retrograde stations: 9 February, 10 June and 7 October (UTC). Some years do have four, when the first comes very early in January, but 2027 is not one of them.
Why are there shadow periods?
Before a retrograde, Mercury moves forward across the degrees it will later retrace; after it, Mercury has to cover them a third time. The pre-shadow and post-shadow name those stretches. They are a modern convention rather than a traditional technique, and astrologers disagree about how much weight to give them.
Is Mercury retrograde bad for travel?
There is no established evidence that journeys during a retrograde go worse. The common advice, to confirm bookings, allow extra time and keep documents to hand, is sensible on any trip. Astrologers who follow the convention simply apply it more carefully on retrograde dates.
Do I need my birth time?
Not for the dates, which are the same for everyone. For the houses in the table above you need your Rising sign, and that needs an accurate birth time.
