A constellation is a picture; a sign is a measurement
Over a year, the Sun appears to travel once around the sky along a line called the ecliptic. That line crosses 13 of the 88 constellations the International Astronomical Union (IAU) recognises. Twelve of them share their names with the zodiac signs. The thirteenth is Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, a large constellation whose southern edge dips across the Sun's path between Scorpius and Sagittarius.
The zodiac signs are something else. In Western (tropical) astrology a sign is a 30° segment of the ecliptic, and the count starts at the point where the Sun sits at the March equinox. That point is 0° Aries. Sagittarius, for example, always runs from 240° to 270° of ecliptic longitude, whatever stars happen to lie behind it. The signs follow the seasons, not the star patterns.
So two true statements can sit side by side. The Sun crosses 13 constellations. The tropical zodiac has 12 signs. Neither fact cancels the other, and the second one is what sets your astrological sign. The calculator below works out your Sun sign in the tropical zodiac from your birth date, time and place.
The dates the Sun spends in each constellation
The table gives the Sun's constellation through 2027, worked out from the IAU's official constellation boundaries and the Sun's astronomical position. These are not outputs of Aurae's astrology engine. They are rounded to the day in Universal Time, so in your own time zone a date can fall one day either side.
| Constellation | Sun enters (2027) | About how long | Tropical sign on that date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capricornus | 20 Jan | 27 days | Aquarius |
| Aquarius | 16 Feb | 24 days | Aquarius |
| Pisces | 12 Mar | 37½ days | Pisces |
| Aries | 19 Apr | 25½ days | Aries |
| Taurus | 14 May | 38 days | Taurus |
| Gemini | 22 Jun | 29 days | Cancer |
| Cancer | 21 Jul | 21 days | Cancer |
| Leo | 11 Aug | 37 days | Leo |
| Virgo | 17 Sep | 44½ days | Virgo |
| Libra | 31 Oct | 23 days | Scorpio |
| Scorpius | 24 Nov | 6½ days | Sagittarius |
| Ophiuchus | 30 Nov | 18 days | Sagittarius |
| Sagittarius | 18 Dec | 33 days (into January 2028) | Sagittarius |
Two things stand out. First, the constellations are wildly unequal: the Sun needs about 44½ days to cross Virgo and only about 6½ days to cross Scorpius. Second, the constellation and the sign of the same name are out of step by most of a month. In 2026 the Sun's crossing of Ophiuchus runs on the same dates, 30 November to 18 December, and every day of it falls inside the tropical sign of Sagittarius.
Borders from 1930, signs from antiquity
The constellation borders in that table are young. The IAU adopted its list of 88 constellations in 1922, and the boundaries, drawn by the Belgian astronomer Eugène Delporte along lines of right ascension and declination, were published in 1930. They were drawn so that every point in the sky belongs to exactly one constellation, and Ophiuchus's southern border happens to clip the ecliptic for a short stretch. That is all it takes for the Sun to pass through it.
The zodiac is much older. By around the fifth century BCE, Babylonian astronomers had divided the ecliptic into twelve equal signs of 30°, each named after a constellation that lay along it. The equal division was the design, not an approximation. By Ptolemy's time, in the second century CE, Greek astrology measured the signs from the spring equinox, which is the tropical zodiac Western astrologers still use.
Ophiuchus itself is not new either. Ptolemy listed it among the 48 constellations of his *Almagest*. It simply never became a sign, because the signs were never a list of constellations.
The equinox point also drifts slowly against the stars, by about 1° every 72 years, a motion called precession. Over two millennia that drift has moved the tropical signs nearly a full sign's width away from the star groups they were named for. It is one more reason the two maps no longer line up, and it changes nothing about how the signs are measured.
What NASA actually said in 2016
The idea that "NASA changed the zodiac" comes from a September 2016 NASA post about constellations and the zodiac. It explained precession and pointed out that the Sun's path crosses 13 constellations. Headlines turned that into a new sign.
NASA's own line was plain: "So, we didn't change any zodiac signs…we just did the math." NASA describes the sky; it does not assign astrological signs, and nothing in that post altered the tropical zodiac. The post has resurfaced several times since, and so has the confusion.
Is Ophiuchus a sign in sidereal or Vedic astrology?
No. Sidereal astrology, including Vedic astrology (Jyotish), also uses twelve equal signs of 30°. The difference is the starting point: sidereal signs are anchored to the stars rather than to the March equinox, which puts them about 24° behind the tropical signs today. Ophiuchus has no sign in that system either.
A small number of modern astrologers have proposed zodiacs with 13 signs of unequal size, based on the constellation borders. These remain a minority approach, and there is no established tradition of interpretation attached to an Ophiuchus sign.
Aurae uses the tropical zodiac with Whole Sign houses. It does not compute sidereal charts, and it does not assign a 13th sign.
Ophiuchus questions, answered
Am I an Ophiuchus if I was born in early December?
Astronomically, if you were born between about 30 November and 18 December, the Sun stood in front of the constellation Ophiuchus. Astrologically, your sign comes from the tropical zodiac, which places every one of those birthdays in Sagittarius. Both statements hold at once, because they measure different things.
Did my zodiac sign change?
No. The tropical signs are fixed to the equinox and have not been redefined. If a chart calculated with your birth details said you were a Scorpio last year, you are a Scorpio now.
Is Ophiuchus a new sign?
No. It is an ancient constellation that has never been one of the twelve signs. What recurs is the news story, not a change in the sky.
What are Ophiuchus personality traits?
There is no established astrological tradition for Ophiuchus as a sign, so Aurae does not assign it traits. Lists of Ophiuchus traits are recent inventions rather than part of any astrological tradition. If you were born in early December, your Sun sign in the tropical zodiac is Sagittarius, and your Moon and Rising signs add the rest of the picture.
Which horoscope should I read if I was born between 30 November and 18 December?
For a Sun-sign horoscope, Sagittarius, because that is where the Sun was in the tropical zodiac on every one of those dates. Some astrologers suggest reading the horoscope for your Rising sign instead, because a horoscope written for the Rising sign counts the houses from it; others stay with the Sun sign. That is a matter of convention, and neither choice involves Ophiuchus.
