A centaur between Saturn and Uranus
Chiron is not a planet. It is a small icy body on a long oval orbit that dips just inside the orbit of Saturn at its closest to the Sun and swings out almost as far as Uranus at its farthest. One lap takes about 50 years.
Charles T. Kowal found it in 1977 on photographic plates taken at Palomar Observatory. It turned out to be the first known member of a whole class of objects, now called centaurs: icy bodies on unstable paths among the giant planets. In the late 1980s Chiron brightened and grew a faint cloud of gas and dust, the way a comet does, so it carries two catalogue names: minor planet 2060 Chiron and comet 95P/Chiron.
Kowal named it after the centaur of Greek myth. Unlike the unruly centaurs of most stories, Chiron was wise and gentle, a teacher of medicine, music and archery whose pupils included Asclepius, Achilles and Jason. In the best-known version he was struck by one of Heracles’ arrows, tipped with the Hydra’s poison. Being immortal, he could not die of a wound he could not cure.
That image gave modern astrologers their name for the body: the wounded healer. Chiron’s sign and house are read as a sore spot that never fully closes, and as the area of life where learning to live with that soreness can become a gift for helping other people through theirs. This is a modern layer of interpretation, built up in the decades after 1977. Ancient and medieval astrology never knew Chiron existed, so it has no traditional rulership, dignity or classical meaning.

Why your Chiron sign is partly generational
Chiron’s orbit is strongly stretched (its eccentricity is about 0.38). Near the Sun it moves quickly; far out it crawls. Seen from Earth, that makes its time in each sign more uneven than that of any other body in your chart. Between 1930 and 2060 a single Chiron sign lasts anywhere from about 1.3 years to about 8.2 years, counting from its first entry into one sign to its first entry into the next:
- ✦Virgo (1943–44) and Libra (1995–96): about 1.3 years each, roughly 16 months. Chiron was near its closest point to the Sun.
- ✦Pisces and Aries: about 8 years each. The Aries stay ran from 2018 to 2026, about 8.2 years.
- ✦Taurus: about 7.1 years, the stretch that begins now.
The same orbit explains why Chiron’s 2026 move into Taurus is slow and hesitant: Chiron is still near the far end of its orbit, where it moves slowest, so each sign takes years.
So the sign alone describes a cohort more than a person. Everyone born across most of a decade can share an Aries or Pisces Chiron, while a Libra Chiron belongs to little more than a year of births. What makes Chiron personal is its house, which depends on your birth time, and the aspects it makes to your other planets.
Chiron in Taurus, 2026 to 2034
After about eight years in Aries, Chiron is crossing into Taurus. Like any slow body near a sign boundary, it goes back and forth before it settles:
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 19 June 2026, 16:09 UTC | Enters Taurus (already 20 June in Singapore) |
| 3 August 2026 | Stations retrograde at 0°52′ Taurus |
| 18 September 2026, about 02:46 UTC | Slips back into Aries, retrograde (still 17 September in the Americas) |
| 6 January 2027 | Stations direct at 26°16′ Aries |
| 14 April 2027, 10:09 UTC | Enters Taurus again, this time for years |
| 8 August 2027 | Stations retrograde at 4°40′ Taurus |
As of October 2026, Chiron is back in the last degrees of Aries, moving retrograde. It leaves Taurus for Gemini on 19 July 2033 at 15:03 UTC, drops back into Taurus on 23 October 2033, and enters Gemini for good on 5 May 2034 at 21:04 UTC, which is already 6 May in India and Singapore.
Astrologers associate Taurus with the body and the senses, with money and possessions, and with a person’s sense of their own worth. A Chiron transit through Taurus is therefore often read as a period when sore points around value, security and physical comfort become easier to see, both collectively and in the house of each chart that Taurus occupies. That is a symbolic reading, not a forecast. It names a theme astrologers pay attention to, not an event anyone can schedule.
Reading your own Chiron sign and house
Chiron’s sign comes from your birth date. Its house needs your birth time as well, because the house is counted from your Rising sign. Aurae uses Whole Sign houses, so Chiron’s house is simply the number of signs from your Rising sign to Chiron’s sign, counting the Rising sign as the 1st. With Gemini rising and Chiron in Aries, for example, Chiron sits in the 11th house: Gemini is the 1st, Cancer the 2nd, and so on round to Aries.
The sign tells you the flavour of the hurt; the house tells you where in life it tends to show up. Astrologers read a Chiron in the 2nd house through money and self-worth, in the 7th through close partnerships, in the 10th through work and public standing. Astrologers also weigh Chiron’s contacts with the rest of the chart. Chiron conjunct or opposite your Sun, Moon or Ascendant is read as pulling its themes toward the centre of your story; Chiron in a quiet corner of the chart, making few aspects, is read as a more private, background sensitivity. Read it as a description of sensitivity, not a sentence. The Chiron area is also read as the place where you may end up most useful to others.

The Chiron return at about 50
A Chiron return is the moment Chiron gets back to the exact degree it occupied when you were born. Because one orbit takes about 50 years, the return comes around age 50. The precise timing shifts a little from person to person, and because Chiron turns retrograde every year, it often crosses your natal degree two or three times over a year or so before it moves on.
Astrologers often read the Chiron return as a time to come to terms with an old hurt, to stop hiding it or fighting it, and to take up a teaching or mentoring role with what it taught you. It is a symbolic marker in midlife, not a prediction of any particular event.
Example: natal Chiron in Taurus
People born from about mid-1976 to mid-1983 have Chiron in Taurus, with a few months of back-and-forth at each end of that range. Their returns arrive as Chiron moves through Taurus from 2026 on. Those born in 1976 and 1977, with Chiron in the first degrees of Taurus, meet it first, during 2026 and 2027. Those born in 1982 and 1983, with Chiron late in the sign, meet it around 2032 and 2033. Either way the return comes close to their 50th birthday, which is the point: the age is fixed by the orbit, not by the sign.
Quick answers about Chiron
Is Chiron a planet?
No. It is a minor body: numbered minor planet 2060 Chiron, also catalogued as comet 95P/Chiron, and classed as a centaur. Astrologers use it alongside the planets, and Aurae includes it in every chart it calculates.
Does Chiron rule a sign?
There is no agreed answer. Some modern astrologers give it Virgo, linking it to healing and craft; others give it Sagittarius, the sign of the centaur and the teacher; many assign it no rulership at all. Traditional astrology predates its discovery and has no place for it. Aurae’s dignity tables leave Chiron without a sign.
Do I need my birth time to find my Chiron sign?
For the sign, almost never. Chiron moves so slowly that the birth date settles it, unless Chiron changed signs on the day you were born. For the house, you do need the time.
What is Chiron in Vedic astrology?
It has no role there. Classical Jyotish works with the seven visible planets plus Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes. Chiron is a modern Western addition. Vedic astrology also measures signs differently, which is explained in why your sign is different in Vedic astrology.
When is my Chiron return?
Around your 50th birthday. Find your natal Chiron sign with the calculator; the return comes when transiting Chiron reaches that same sign and degree again.
