Born on the Cusp? How to Find Your Real Sun Sign

Quick answer

Sign change dates move every year by hours, sometimes a day. Every cusp’s real date range from 1950 to 2030, and why you have one Sun sign, not two.

You have one Sun sign, not two. At any moment the Sun is in exactly one sign, and it changes sign at a precise minute that shifts from year to year. If you were born within a day or so of that change, your birth date alone can’t settle your sign. Your birth date, time and place together can.

One Sun, one sign, one exact minute

"Born on the cusp" usually means born close to the moment the Sun moved from one sign into the next. The Sun moves about 1° a day, so on most days of the year there is no doubt about its sign. On the day of a sign change, there is: the change happens at a particular minute, and births before it belong to the old sign while births after it belong to the new one.

Take a hypothetical baby born in London on 23 October 2026. The Sun entered Scorpio that day at 09:38 UTC, which was 10:38 by British Summer Time. Born at 10:00, the baby has the Sun in late Libra. Born at 11:00, the Sun is in Scorpio. Same date, different sign.

That is why the answer for a cusp birth comes from a calculation, not a date table. The calculator below takes your birth date, time and place, converts them to Universal Time with the time-zone rules in force that day, and gives the Sun's sign for that moment.

Why the change dates move every year

Sign change dates shift because the calendar and the Sun's year don't match. The Sun takes about 365.2422 days to return to the same point on the ecliptic, while a common calendar year has 365 days. Each common year, the Sun reaches every sign about 5 hours 49 minutes later by the clock than the year before. A leap day then pulls the dates back by roughly 18 hours.

You can see the drift in two consecutive years. The Sun entered Aries on 20 March 2026 at 14:45 UTC and enters it on 20 March 2027 at 20:24 UTC, 5 hours 39 minutes later. Because a leap day every four years slightly overcorrects, the whole pattern also creeps earlier across the century, which is why, between 1950 and 2030, the latest dates fall in 1951 or 1952 and the earliest in 2028 or 2029.

Printed sign dates, such as "Scorpio: 23 October to 21 November", are averages rounded to whole days. They are right for most birthdays and wrong for some births on the first or last day of each range.

Every sign change: earliest and latest, 1950–2030

This table gives the earliest and latest moment the Sun entered each sign across the 81 years from 1950 to 2030, computed with Aurae's astronomy engine. Times are UTC; in your time zone the date can be a day either side.

If your birthday falls inside one of these windows, you are a cusp birth and need your birth time. Here are the exact changes for 2026 and 2027, with the places where the local date differs from the UTC date (US Eastern and Pacific, UK, India, Singapore):

Sun enters2026 (UTC)2027 (UTC)Local date differs
Aquarius20 Jan, 01:4420 Jan, 07:302026: 19 Jan in the US. 2027: 19 Jan on the US West Coast
Pisces18 Feb, 15:5118 Feb, 21:332027: 19 Feb in India and Singapore

Capricorn21 Dec, 20:5022 Dec, 02:422026: 22 Dec in India and Singapore. 2027: 21 Dec in the US

The 2027 Aries change is a good example. At 20:24 UTC on 20 March it is still 20 March in New York and London, but already 21 March in India and East Asia.

Checking your own Sun sign

You need three things: your birth date, your birth time and the place you were born. The time matters only if you were born on or next to a change date, but on those days it decides everything.

Watch for the time-zone trap. A birth certificate records local clock time, sometimes including daylight saving time, while ephemeris times are in UTC. Take a hypothetical birth in New York at 9 pm on 22 September 2026. Most date tables start Libra on 23 September, so the date looks like Virgo. But the Sun entered Libra at 00:05 UTC on the 23rd, which was 8:05 pm in New York on the 22nd. A 9 pm birth is a Libra. A 7 pm birth the same evening is a Virgo.

If you don't know your birth time and you were born on a change day, the honest answer is that either sign is possible. Try a morning and an evening time in the calculator. If both give the same sign, you have your answer. If they differ, a birth record or a family memory of roughly when you were born will settle it.

Do cusp blends exist?

This is contested, and both positions are held by working astrologers.

The blend view. Some astrologers read the last or first few degrees of a sign as carrying a flavour of the neighbouring sign, so a Sun at 29° Libra might be described with a hint of Scorpio. Popular cusp nicknames grew out of this idea in modern popular astrology.

The traditional view. In traditional astrology the sign is decisive. A Sun at 29° Libra is in Libra, with Venus as its ruler, and gets nothing from Scorpio by being close to it. The boundary is exact.

There is a third explanation for why cusp-born people often say they relate to both signs, and it needs no blend at all. Mercury is never more than about 28° from the Sun and Venus never more than about 47°, so someone with the Sun at the end of a sign often has Mercury or Venus in the next one. The Moon and Rising sign can add a completely different note. The whole chart, not the cusp, is usually what you're feeling.

Cusp questions

Can I be two signs at once?

No. At any moment the Sun is in exactly one sign. You can have other planets in the neighbouring sign, which is often what makes a cusp birth feel mixed, but your Sun sign is one sign.

Why does my horoscope column give a different date range?

Printed date ranges are averages rounded to whole days. The real change moves by hours each year and can land on a different calendar date depending on the year and your time zone. For a birth on a boundary day, the calculation wins over the table.

Is my Moon on a cusp too?

It can be, and more often than the Sun. The Moon changes sign about every 2¼ days: in 2027 its stays in a sign average 54.7 hours and run from about 47 to 61 hours. Anyone born on a Moon sign change day needs a birth time to know their Moon sign. The Moon sign calculator checks it from your birth details.

Do I need my birth time if I wasn't born on a cusp?

Not for your Sun sign. If your birthday sits well inside a sign's dates, the Sun was in that sign all day. You do need a birth time for your Rising sign, which changes about every two hours.
