Lagna Calculator
Find your Lagna — the rashi rising in the east at the moment you were born — with its degree, nakshatra and lord, and your Western rising sign beside it.
Quick answer
Your Lagna (Vedic ascendant) is the sign of the sidereal zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It is your first house: in Jyotish every house is counted from it, and the ruler of its rashi is your Lagna lord. The Lagna changes rashi about every two hours, so it needs your birth time and place. It is often a sign earlier than your Western rising sign, because the sidereal zodiac sits about 24° behind the tropical one.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Lagna?
The Lagna (ascendant) is the point of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, and the sign it falls in. In Jyotish it is the first house (tanu bhava, the self), and the houses that follow are counted from it, one rashi each. Read with the Moon rashi, it is one of the two anchors of a Vedic chart.
Is the Lagna the same as my rising sign?
It is the same point in the sky, measured in a different zodiac. Your Western rising sign uses the tropical zodiac; the Lagna uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24° behind. So a rising degree in roughly the first 24° of a Western sign falls in the previous rashi — which is why many people’s Lagna is one sign before their Western rising sign.
Why does the Lagna need an exact birth time?
The Earth turns once a day, so all twelve rashis rise in turn: each about two hours on average (longer for some signs, shorter for others, depending on your latitude), and a degree about every four minutes. A birth time even ten minutes off can change the Lagna when it is near the edge of a rashi; the calculator warns you when it is within 1°.
What is the Lagna lord?
The graha that rules the Lagna rashi — Mars for Mesha and Vrishchika, Venus for Vrishabha and Tula, Mercury for Mithuna and Kanya, the Moon for Karka, the Sun for Simha, Jupiter for Dhanu and Meena, Saturn for Makara and Kumbha. Jyotish reads its sign and house as a key to the whole chart.
Which houses does this use?
Whole-sign houses (bhavas): the Lagna’s rashi is the first house, the next rashi the second, and so on. That is how the North Indian chart is drawn — the top diamond is the first house — and it is the house system Aurae uses for every Vedic chart.
Which ayanamsa does this use?
Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the standard of the Indian national calendar and the default in most Jyotish software. The Lagna is found from the tropical ascendant for your birth time and place, minus the ayanamsa on your birth date.
