Kundli Matching Calculator

Enter two people’s birth details for their Ashtakoot Guna Milan: the traditional North Indian match of the two Moons, scored out of 36.

Quick answer

Kundli matching (Guna Milan) compares two people’s Moon nakshatras and Moon signs across eight kootas worth 36 points in all. By tradition, below 18 is not recommended, 18 to 24.5 is average, 25 to 32.5 is good and 33 or more is excellent. Nadi and Bhakoot dosha are weighed on their own, and astrologers recognise exceptions to both. Enter both people’s birth details to see the total, its band and any dosha.

The classical tables are directional, so each person takes a side, and the sides can change the score.

Frequently asked questions

What is Guna Milan?

Guna Milan (Ashtakoot matching) is the traditional North Indian way of comparing two horoscopes for marriage. It reads only the two Moons — their nakshatras and rashis — through eight kootas: Varna 1 point, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8, 36 points (gunas) in all.

What is a good Guna Milan score?

Traditionally 18 is the minimum: below 18 is not recommended, 18 to 24.5 is average, 25 to 32.5 is good and 33 or more is excellent. Astrologers also look at the doshas, the rest of both charts and the people themselves; the score alone is one traditional lens, not a verdict on a relationship.

What is Nadi dosha?

Each nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis — Adi, Madhya or Antya. When both birth stars share a nadi, the Nadi koota scores 0 of 8, which tradition treats as the weightiest dosha in Guna Milan. Classical exceptions are often applied, for example when the Moons are in the same rashi but different nakshatras.

What is Bhakoot dosha?

Bhakoot reads how far apart the two Moon signs are. When one is the 2nd, 5th or 6th sign from the other (2/12, 5/9 or 6/8), Bhakoot scores 0 of 7. Tradition lifts it in some cases — for example when the two Moon-sign lords are the same planet or friends.

Why are there two sides, A and B?

The classical tables are written for a groom and a bride, and three kootas (Varna, Vashya and Gana) score differently depending on who is on which side. Person A takes the side tradition gives the groom, Person B the bride’s; for any couple, put each person on the side you want read.

Do we need our birth times?

They help. Guna Milan uses the Moon, which moves about 13° a day and can change nakshatra or rashi within a day. Without a time, the Moon is taken at local noon and the calculator tells you when that day’s Moon could change the score.

What about Mangal dosha?

Mangal (Kuja) dosha — Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna or the Moon — is checked separately from the 36 points. It needs both full charts, so it is part of Kundli matching in the Aurae app (Pro), with the two most widely repeated exceptions applied.
